I just read "Design like you give a Damn by Architecture for Humanity. Here are some things I learned.



9.2 Million People were refugees in 2004, there are now more
- 49% women
- 47% children under 18
- only 4% men
- The average duration grew from 9 years ('93) to 17 years ('03)

There were 25 Million "Internally Displaced Persons" in 49 countries as of 2004.
- Half of them in Africa
- 70-80% of IDP's are women and children
- Average length 14 years
- 14 Million are estimated to be at risk of Death through violence

600 Million People in urban areas live in slums (not fit for human habitation)
- this includes 2 million Europeans
- 1 Billion people in rural areas live in similar
- 1 in 6 People live in slums now
- 1 in 3 People will live in slums by 2020

100 Million children live on the streets in the developing world
- 40 Million children in Latin America
- 3 Million in western Europe
- 700,000 people are without shelter in the US
- 36,000 in NYC alone (bigger than my hometown of Puyallup, WA)

- 2/3 of the world's working hours
Women produce
- 1/2 of the world's food
Women earn
- 10% of the world's income
Women own
- under 1% of the world's property

110 Million children are not in school, 2/3 of them girls
- 40-60% of sexual assault is to girls under the age of 16
- 70% of the 1.3 Billion people in absolute poverty are women

20 Million AIDS related deaths between 1981 and 2003
- 12 Millions orphans from AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa
- 2/3 of the 22.5 Million people living with HIV/AIDS are in Africa
- 4.6 Million of them are in India, 30,000 are getting treatment ( less than 1%)
- About 1.1 Million of them are in the US, 24-27% are unaware

275 Million children never attend or don't finish Primary Education
- 870 Million adults are illiterate
- 7.8 years is the average schooling in Africa, 3% of which is tertiary.
- 15.4 years is the average in Europe, 3 years of which is tertiary.

1.7 Billion People lack access to clean water
3.3 Billion People lack access to sanitation
- 50% of urban Asia, or 700 Million People, lack adequate water
- 60% of urban Asia, or 800 Million People, lack adequate sanitation
- child mortality rate is 10-20 times higher in cities without sanitation
- Every Year, 2.2 Million People die from preventable water/sanitation diseases
