This may be the most non-sustainable weekend of anyone in my school and I am so happy. Today I fly to my parents other place in CA near Palm Springs. It's huge, air conditioned with I think 4 fountains and a pool on a golf course and I think the rumor goes that their grass is changed every 6 months to plant the right kind for the season. Everyone going, all 11 of us, live within about 10 miles of each other hear in WA. So crazy....
But, as huge a carbon footprint this makes, I'll play the devils advocate again and say I am fully looking forward to a decadent weekend in the sun. No worries about work or school, no obligations or concerns about feeding myself or paying bills. It will be a real vacation getting tan in the warm sun far from my beautiful, interesting, old drafty apartment in the rain.
To continue to justify my singlehanded destruction of the earth, I believe it is important to step away from you life with those you love. My family all have such busy lives that we rarely spend the quality time needed to maintain true relationship. This weekend is a huge opportunity to connect with most of them, only possible when stuck together in the middle of the desert, 100's of miles from the nearest Nordstrom (that's right, I was surprised too).
To my friends, thank you for you many invitations to join your holiday brunches, feasts and parties. I look forward to seeing you when I return, but not until I have soaked up plenty of sunny airline miles.
Keep warm and well fed!
