Del Martin dies at 87

Del Martin died yesterday at the age of 87. She was an activist and organizer who struggled for equality throughout her life. She and her wife Lyon were the first couple married in California on June 16th. The wedding was presided over by Mayor Gavin Newsom, who stated that "this is an extraordinary moment in history, I think today, marriage as an institution has been strengthened." I am sad to see a pioneer pass away so quickly after her wedding, 55 years in the waiting. Del and Phyllis met in 1950 and moved in together on Valentines Day in 1953. Her widow had these words:

"Ever since I met Del 55 years ago, I could never imagine a day would come when she wouldn't be by my side. I am so lucky to have known her, loved her and been her partner in all things," Lyon said. "I also never imagined there would be a day that we would actually be able to get married.

"I am devastated, but I take some solace in knowing we were able to enjoy the ultimate rite of love and commitment before she passed."

To those who said that my being gay would only lead to terrible things like AIDS, I say that it is not only me you were insulting, it is the pillars of society like Del and Phyllis whom your ignorant hate has ultimately hurt. Thankfully she found refuge and love that was officially validated before she died.
